Biography

Alan Nash is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University. He obtained his PhD in Historical Geography from the University of Cambridge and was a Junior Research Fellow in Geography at the University of Sheffield in England before moving to Canada in the early 1980s. He has taught courses on population geography and historical geography at Queen’s University Kingston, held research associate positions at the University of Western Ontario’s Centre for Canadian Population Studies, and at the Institute for Research on Public Policy in Ottawa. Dr. Nash currently teaches introductory and upper-level geography courses, focusing on cultural geography and the development of ethnic restaurants in Montreal. His research interests include patterns of cultural diffusion, gravestone designs (using Icelandic and Caribbean examples), and the evolution of Montreal's restaurant scene, particularly regarding international cuisine. He has served multiple terms as department chair and Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Geographers. His professional affiliations include being a Fellow of Concordia's School of Community and Public Affairs and a member of the Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies.
