Biography

Alan Patten is the Howard Harrison Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Politics and Director of the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University, a Master’s from the University of Toronto, and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. His academic career includes teaching appointments at notable institutions such as McGill University and the University of Exeter, along with visiting faculty status at the State Islamic University of Indonesia in Jakarta. Patten’s scholarship focuses on the field of Political Theory, particularly exploring topics such as justice, democratic theory, nationalism, and multiculturalism. His recent publications include 'Equal Recognition: Moral Foundations of Minority Rights', which was published in 2014 by Princeton University Press, and 'Hegel’s Idea of Freedom', which won the APSA Book Prize in Political Theory and the C.B. Macpherson Prize awarded by the Canadian Political Science Association. He has also co-edited works in the realm of language rights and has contributed articles to various prestigious journals including 'Political Theory', 'Ethics', and the 'American Political Science Review'. Currently, he is working on a book tentatively titled 'Liberal Theory of Religious Freedom'.
