Biography

Alan Said is an Associate Professor at the University of Gothenburg in the Department of Applied Information Technology. He focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and recommender systems, with particular interests in fairness, transparency, and sustainability in AI. Alan's research examines the impacts of AI-driven decision-making on individuals and society, especially within personalization digital platforms and the environmental footprint of machine learning models. His background includes positions in both academia and industry, having worked as a machine learning engineer in the private sector and held research roles at Delft University of Technology and Technische Universität Berlin. He employs an interdisciplinary approach that integrates technical innovation with societal impacts, fostering collaborations across various disciplines to promote the development of ethical AI. Alan has been key in securing research funding aimed at responsible AI and healthcare applications of machine learning, and he has contributed significantly to the curriculum design of the MSc program in Human-Centered AI. His research projects have focused on sustainable, personalized, and explainable AI, financed by various institutions including EUTOPIA and Vinnova.
