Biography

Alan Sked is an Emeritus Professor at the Department of International History at the London School of Economics (LSE). He received his undergraduate education at the University of Glasgow, after which he pursued further studies at Merton College, Oxford, where he completed his D.Phil. under the supervision of A.J.P. Taylor. Sked was appointed to the International History department at LSE before finishing his thesis and continued to contribute to the department until his retirement in 2015. He has been recognized as a world expert on the Habsburg Monarchy, with his works translated into several languages, including German, Italian, Czech, Portuguese, and Japanese. In addition to his academic writings, he served as a historical consultant for a BBC documentary on Abraham Lincoln and published the book "Abraham Lincoln: Critical History of an American Icon" in 2013. Sked's research interests include the Hapsburg Empire and modern European history, with recent presentations focusing on Talleyrand and the Congress of Vienna. He has been involved with various funding councils and has contributed significantly to European Studies.
