Biography

Alan Stahl is a medieval historian with specialties in coinage and monetary history, particularly focused on Venice. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977, with a dissertation titled 'The Merovingian Coinage Region Metz,' which later became a book published in Louvain-la-Neuve in 1982. His notable publications include 'Venetian Tornesello: Medieval Colonial Coinage' (New York, 1985) and 'Zecca: Mint Venice Middle Ages' (Baltimore, 2000). Stahl served as the Curator of Medieval Coins at the American Numismatic Society from 1980 to 2000. He has taught at various institutions including the Università di Venezia, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Rice University. He is currently the Curator of Numismatics at Princeton University and teaches in the Classics and History departments. Stahl is co-director of the Michael Rhodes Project and co-editor of the three-volume publication 'Michael Rhodes: Fifteenth Century Maritime Miscellany' (Cambridge, 2009). In 2008, he was involved in a Guggenheim project titled 'The Nexus Wealth Power Medieval Venice.'
