Biography

Alan Stanbridge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He teaches courses in the Music Culture program and has contributed to the Master of Museum Studies program at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. His undergraduate courses include Critical Issues in Music and Society, Exploring Music in Social and Cultural Contexts, and Jazz Roots and Routes. Stanbridge has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in the fields of popular music, jazz history, cultural policy, and museum studies, including the book 'Rhythm Changes: Jazz, Culture, Discourse' published by Routledge in 2022. He has contributed to the Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World, writing main entries on Jazz Postmodernism and a forthcoming entry on Hollywood Musical. Stanbridge's research interests include the interdisciplinary exploration of how various discourses have shaped contemporary understandings of musical meaning and cultural value. He has received grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to support his research. Before his academic career, Stanbridge had a substantial professional background in arts management and music promotion in Great Britain, serving in various roles including Festival Director and Administrative Director for notable music events. His work has been recognized with teaching awards, and he is actively involved in editorial and advisory capacities for several cultural policy journals and organizations.
