Biography

Alan T. Stone is a professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering, and an affiliate researcher at the Johns Hopkins Institute for NanoBioTechnology. Stone's research focuses on the intersections of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and nanosciences, particularly exploring the natural biogeochemical phenomena and the properties and transformations of synthetic chemicals in environmental media. He investigates the engineered systems and the consequences of human activities involving chemicals used in agriculture, animal production, forestry, and aquaculture, with a specific interest in the large volumes of water utilized in cooling processes, papermaking, and various water supplies. Stone received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1978, followed by a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering Science in 1981 and a PhD in 1983, both from the California Institute of Technology.
