Biography

Professor Alan Tansman earned his A.B. from Columbia University in East Asian Studies, followed by his M.S.J. from the School of Journalism at Columbia University, and his M.A., M. Phil, and Ph.D. from Yale University, specializing in Japanese literature. He is known for his expertise in modern Japanese literature and culture. Professor Tansman has authored several significant works, including 'Writings Kôda Aya' from Yale and 'Culture Japanese Fascism' from Duke. He is currently working on a book that compares Japanese Jewish responses to atrocity and is the co-editor of 'Studies in Modern Japanese Literature' forthcoming from California. In addition to his focused research on literature, he has published extensively on Japanese cultural criticism, popular culture, film, and Area Studies, as well as the sublime aspects of Japanese literature. He also specializes in translating Japanese fiction and criticism.
