Biography

Alan Turry, DA, LCAT, MT-BC, earned Bachelor's, Master's, Doctoral degrees in Music Therapy from New York University. He is a full-time faculty member teaching courses in NYU's Music Therapy graduate program and serves as Faculty Liaison at Steinhardt's Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy. As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Turry spearheads the development of the Music Engagement Scale, a research instrument designed to measure client engagement in music, a crucial component of the Nordoff-Robbins music therapy process. He received the Arthur Flagler Fultz Research Award in 2012 from the American Music Therapy Association for his collaboration with the Center Rusk Rehabilitation Institute at NYU Medical Center to develop research integrating music therapy with occupational therapy for stroke rehabilitation. Dr. Turry is recognized for his innovative contributions to the Nordoff-Robbins approach, integrating contemporary music styles, improvisation, and improvised songs into community music therapy practice. He is engaged in pioneering research studying the improvisation process linking elements of music with the verbal and lyrical content of improvised songs. He has published numerous chapters and articles on contemporary developments in Nordoff-Robbins music therapy and is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in music therapy clinical techniques. Alan has taught and presented his work throughout Asia and Europe as a visiting lecturer at the Nordoff-Robbins Centre in London.
