Alan Whitmarsh is a Senior Lecturer and research group leader in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Manchester. He obtained his B.Sc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Sheffield. He carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and joined the University of Manchester in 2000 as a lecturer. His research interests focus on the regulation of stress responses, ageing, and mitochondrial-to-nuclear signalling. He is particularly interested in how genetic and environmental factors influence ageing and the onset of age-related diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. His work aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms that regulate lifespan and enhance our understanding of age-related disease. In addition, he is investigating the roles of TOR signalling pathways in cell fate and metabolism, which are implicated in many diseases including cancer and diabetes. He teaches Cell Signalling to final-year undergraduate students and is actively involved in tutorials for medical students. Alan leads research projects aimed at understanding the communication between mitochondria and the nucleus in response to reactive oxygen species and elucidating the mechanisms governing the regulation of TOR, a central mediator of cell fate.
