Biography

Alan Young is a Professor at the University of Oxford in the Medical Sciences Division. He serves as the Director of Information Science, where he oversees strategic initiatives within Oxford Population Health. His work involves managing teams responsible for systems integration, data acquisition, randomization services, and large-scale data curation. Prior to this, Alan worked with the Clinical Trial Service Unit & Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) beginning in 1994. Originally trained as a mathematician, he gained the first prize at Wadham College from 1983 to 1986 and received the Junior Mathematical Prize at St Cross College. His doctoral thesis and postdoctoral work were focused on computer modeling of complex physical and biological ecosystems. He has extensive experience in mathematical genetics and has contributed to the Centre for Human Genetics by developing analysis programs. Among his diverse experiences, Alan has also spent five years as a junior fellow at University College, teaching mathematics to students of various levels, and has a background as a martial arts instructor for 15 years.
