Biography

Alanna Thain is an Associate Professor and Director of the Institute of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at McGill University. Her research interests broadly encompass 20th and 21st-century media, art, and performance theory. A notable focus is on bodies, media, and the connections between affects and intensities over time. She has authored several books including 'Bodies Suspense: Time Affect Cinema' (2017) and forthcoming works on lo-tech pop culture and performance studies. Thain is the director of the Moving Image Research Lab, which investigates the relations between moving image technologies and the understanding of the moving body. In addition to her written scholarship, she co-directs research-creation projects that interrogate contemporary issues in horror media performance and the cultural implications of sleep and sociability. She has received multiple grants from SSHRC and FQRSC to support her research initiatives. Thain has also contributed to several academic journals and co-edited special issues focusing on contemporary media practices and the role of dance in film.
