Biography

Alar Toomre received S.B. degrees in aeronautics and physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1957 and held a Marshall Scholarship, completing his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester in 1960. He began his career at MIT as a C. L. E. Moore instructor from 1960 to 1962, then spent a year at the Institute for Advanced Study, and joined the mathematics faculty at MIT in 1963. He was promoted to associate professor of applied mathematics in 1965 and became a full professor in 1970. His research interests are focused on astrophysics, stellar dynamics, and fluid mechanics. Over the years, Professor Toomre has served on numerous administrative committees at MIT and beyond, including the MIT Committee on Discipline and leading various search and selection committees. He has been recognized as a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fairchild Fellow, and a MacArthur Fellow. He received the Brouwer Award from the Division of Dynamical Astronomy of the American Astronomical Society in 1994, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1974 and the National Academy of Sciences in 1983. In 2014, he was awarded the Magellanic Premium Medal by the American Philosophical Society for his extensive work on the dynamics of galaxies, and in 2016, he was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society.
