Professor Alastair Buchan heads the Laboratory of Cerebral Ischemia with the aim to identify novel neuroprotective strategies used in the treatment and prevention of acute stroke. He conducts preclinical studies on putative neuroprotectants in stroke models and runs human studies to identify potential targets for treatment strategies and markers for monitoring patients. His work takes a multimodal approach that involves aspects of cellular and molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, in vivo imaging, surgery, and clinical medicine. His interests currently lie in exciting avenues of stroke research, targeting novel neuroprotective pathways in brain ischemia, including oxygen sensing mechanisms and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). He also utilizes proteomic and metabolomic techniques to identify new biomarkers for stroke. His research includes investigating neurovascular coupling in stroke and exploring pericyte control of capillary blood flow to improve the efficacy of approved treatments for acute stroke, such as recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA).
