Biography

Albert Van Dijk leads the Centre for Water and Landscape Dynamics at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University. He obtained his undergraduate degree and Master's degree in Environmental Sciences in 1996, followed by a PhD in 2002 from VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands. From 2003 to 2012, he worked with CSIRO Land and Water and was involved in the Murray-Darling Sustainable Yields project, a significant study in the field of water resources. In 2012, he joined the Fenner School and chaired the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University, Netherlands from 2021 to 2022. His research focuses on the interactions between vegetation and the hydrological cycle, covering topics such as soil erosion, nutrient cycling, salinity, surface energy balance, carbon cycling, fire risk, biodiversity, ecological resilience, and crop growth. He has authored over 200 publications, emphasizing the practical application of research in environmental science, satellite remote sensing, and data modeling for water resources and natural hazards. His dedication to translating theoretical knowledge into tangible outcomes marks his significant contributions to the field.
