Biography

Alberto Diaz-Cayeros joined the faculty of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University in 2013. He previously served as an Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego, where he also directed the Center for US-Mexico Studies from 2008 to 2013. Prior to his time at UCSD, he was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Stanford University from 2001 to 2008 and at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published works in both Spanish and English, including a notable book on federalism and fiscal authority in Latin America. His recent work examines the political dynamics of poverty relief and social policy in Mexico. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a Senior Fellowship at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health and various grants for field research in Mexico. His interests also encompass comparative politics, political economy, and the role of governance in public health policy, highlighting the interplay between criminal violence, security, and poverty.
