Biography

Alberto Godioli is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, where he also serves as the Programme Director for the Netherlands Research School for Literary Studies. He obtained his PhD from Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa in 2012 and was a Newton International Fellow at the University of Edinburgh from 2013 to 2015. His primary research fields include humor, satire, and media, with a focus on areas such as humor jurisprudence and online content moderation. He has published works including 'E(n)stranged: Rethinking Defamiliarization in Literature and Visual Culture' and 'Laughter Realism Modernism'. In 2021, he was awarded the NWO Vidi Grant for his project 'Humor Court', which examines the adjudication of humorous content in law. Godioli is involved in several high-profile collaborations, including with the Columbia Global Freedom Expression and UNESCO, addressing legal frameworks surrounding humor and free speech. He is the founder and co-director of the Forum for Humor and the Law and has an active role in various academic networks and initiatives.
