Biography

Albrecht Riethmüller studied Musicology, Philosophy, and Modern German Literature at the University of Freiburg, where he obtained his doctorate in 1974. He served as an assistant for several years and achieved his habilitation in 1984. In 1986, he became a Professor of Musicology at the University of Frankfurt and was appointed to the Freie Universität Berlin in 1992. A member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature since 1991, he has held various roles in academic governance, including Dean and Deputy Dean. He received the John G. Diefenbaker Award from Canada Council Arts in 1999 and has been an Affiliated Faculty Member at York University since 2002. His research focuses on Music History since the European Enlightenment, Music of Ancient Greece, and the history of music theory and aesthetics. He currently leads several research projects at the Freie Universität Berlin and is the editor of the journal Archiv für Musikwissenschaft, among other scholarly activities.
