Biography

Alcherio Martinoli received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He is currently a Full Professor at the School of Architecture, Civil, Environmental Engineering, where he heads the Distributed Intelligent Systems Algorithms Laboratory. Before joining EPFL, he conducted research at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of ETHZ, the Institute of Industrial Automation of the Spanish Research Council in Madrid, and at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, U.S.A. His research interests involve the design, control, and optimization of distributed intelligent systems, including multi-robot systems and sensor actuator networks. He focuses on understanding and controlling mixed societies that consist of natural and artificial components, employing model-based data-driven techniques iteratively closing the loop between theory and physical experiments. His contributions span fundamental to applied research, particularly in environmental and civil engineering. He has published numerous works in prestigious journals and conferences, contributing significantly to the field of robotics and intelligent systems.
