Biography

Alden Young is an associate professor at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, specializing in political economic history with a focus on Africa and the Middle East. He has written extensively on Sudan and is currently engaged in several research projects that examine the impact of the Arab Gulf States on the Greater Red Sea region since the 1970s. Young is also working on a book that explores post-partition conflicts in the Horn of Africa, particularly involving Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia-Eritrea, collaborating with political scientist Michael Woldemariam. Before joining Yale, he served as an associate professor of African American Studies at UCLA and has been a standing member of the faculty at the International Institute. He taught for five years in the History Department at Drexel University. In addition, Young is a fellow at the Berggruen Institute and a member of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is the author of "Transforming Sudan: Decolonization, Economic Development, and State Formation" published by Cambridge University Press in 2017, with a paperback release in 2020. His academic work has appeared in numerous journals, and he also writes for popular forums such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and Noema Magazine.
