Biography

Alec Jacobson is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto, specializing in computer science and mathematics. His research focuses on geometry processing, machine learning applied to 2D/3D geometry, physics-based simulation, and computational fabrication. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from ETH Zurich, where he was advised by Prof. Olga Sorkine-Hornung. Throughout his career, Jacobson has published numerous papers in the proceedings of ACM SIGGRAPH and has led the development of the widely recognized geometry processing library, libigl, which won the SGP software award in 2015. His contributions to the field have been acknowledged with several accolades, including the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award in 2020, a Sloan Research Fellowship in 2022, and the Outstanding Teaching Award from CS-Can/Info-Can in 2023. He has also received funding from NSERC Discovery and Ontario Early Research Award programs for his innovative research. Outside of teaching and research, Jacobson is active in mentoring students and guiding them in their academic pursuits, particularly in geometry processing and related subjects.
