Alec Tzannes became Dean of UNSW Built Environment in 2008 and served as a Professor of Design Practice (Built Environment). He is the founding Director of TZANNES, an architecture and urban design practice. Over his career, Alec has been recognized with more than 100 awards in architecture and urban design, including being made a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to architecture and education. He received an honorary doctorate from UNSW in 2017 and was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects' Gold Medal in 2018. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney, where he graduated with the University Medal, and a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University. Alec also served as a Visiting Professorial Fellow at Queensland University of Technology and taught design studios at the University of Sydney from 1979 to 1983. His research interests include Urban Design, Density, Housing, and Architectural Practice.
