Born in New York in 1960, Alejandro Lapunzina was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He earned his professional degree in architecture (Arquitecto) from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and continued his studies at Washington University in St. Louis, where he received the AIA Medal for Excellence in the study of architecture. He has worked with notable architectural firms such as Abal & Cassola Arquitectos in Buenos Aires from 1983-1986, and Kromm, Rikimaru & Johansen in St. Louis from 1988-1989. As an independent architect, he has worked on projects in Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States. His research primarily focuses on the work of Le Corbusier in the Americas and the associated history, theory, and criticism of modern and contemporary architecture. Lapunzina taught at the University of Arkansas from 1989 to 1991 before joining the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s School of Architecture in the Fall of 1991. He has held various administrative positions within Illinois, including the Director of the School’s Study Abroad Program in Versailles from 1994 to 1999 and 2002 to 2013, Chair of International Programs from 1999 to 2002, and Associate Director of Graduate Studies from 2000 to 2002. Since 2014, he has served as the Director of the Illinois Architecture Study Abroad Program in Barcelona-El Vallès and was named the Suzanne & William Allen Professor of Architecture in January 2020.
