Biography

Alejandro Nunez-Jimenez is a senior researcher in Prof. Volker Hoffmann’s Group on Sustainability Technology (SusTec) at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zurich). His research focuses on the influence of technological change on energy policies to facilitate the transition to sustainable energy systems. Alejandro is also an associate at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, where he investigates the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing energy systems. In 2024, he was awarded an Ambizione fellowship by the Swiss National Science Foundation to develop Zero-AMPS, a new modeling framework that combines agent-based energy system modeling. Starting in 2025, he will lead his own team on this four-year project. The Zero-AMPS model aims to provide insights into how businesses and industries react to policies that are introduced. Alejandro completed his PhD in 2020 on designing energy policies that harness technological change at ETH Zurich and holds an MSc in Energy Management and Sustainability from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and a BSc in Energy Engineering from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). He has worked as a PV System Engineer in the solar photovoltaic industry and has experience as a Business Development Analyst. Alejandro has also gained academic experience as a Research Assistant at EPFL, co-founded the Energy Business, Policy, and Technology Group, and served as the Analytics Director for the Young Leaders in Energy Sustainability Europe network. In 2019, he co-founded the Energy Blog at ETH Zurich, creating a space for discussion on significant energy topics.
