Dr. Alena Alamgir

Biography

Alena Alamgir is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Technical Communication at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Tech. She obtained her PhD in Sociology from Rutgers University in 2014, where her dissertation, which won the prestigious Theda Skocpol Dissertation Prize, focused on socialist internationalism and labor exchange programs. Alena has extensive experience in research, including a postdoctoral stint at St. Antony's College, University of Oxford, analyzing global socialism and migration. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on technical communication, scientific writing, and oral presentation skills. She has organized workshops that have helped students secure renowned fellowships such as the NSF GRFP and the Sloan Fellowship. Her research interests encompass immigration, labor migration, gender, ethnic relations, and globalization, particularly in the context of state socialism and East-Central Europe.
