Biography

Alena Ledeneva is a Professor at University College London, specializing in Politics and Society in the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. She is an internationally renowned expert on informal governance in Russia, with research interests focusing on corruption, the informal economy, economic crime, informal practices in corporate governance, and the role of networks and patron-client relationships within Russian society. Her significant publications include 'Russia's Economy Favours: Blat, Networking, Informal Exchange' (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and 'Russia Modernize? Sistema, Power Networks and Informal Governance' (Cambridge University Press, 2013), both of which are considered essential reading in Russian studies and social sciences. She received her PhD in Social Political Theory from the University of Cambridge in 1996 and has been a member of UCL since 1999. As a pillar leader of EC-funded research projects, she has worked on various initiatives including ANTICORRP.eu and the INFORM project in the West Balkans.
