Major Alenko Sakanovic is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He was born and raised in a refugee camp in Croatia during the Yugoslav war and was inspired to study medicine after witnessing Doctors Without Borders treat his family members. He subsequently moved to Canada as a refugee and completed his BSc and MSc degrees in Biochemistry and Human Molecular Genetics at the University of Ottawa. Major Sakanovic attended medical school and completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Ottawa under the Medical Officer Training Plan, joining the Canadian Armed Forces. He has spent five years as a military family physician and is now accepted into the Canadian Armed Forces postgraduate training program in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency and fellowships in Orthopaedic Trauma and Comprehensive Hand & Wrist Surgery at the University of Ottawa and has been deployed in various missions across the globe, including the Philippines, Kuwait, Iraq, Poland, Lebanon, and the Canadian Arctic.
