Biography

Alessandro Astolfi was born on October 11, 1967, in Rome, Italy. He graduated with a cum laude diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1991. He worked as a research assistant at the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zurich from 1992 to 1996 and completed a Master of Science in Information Technology at ETH Zurich in 1995. He obtained his PhD in Technical Sciences from ETH Zurich in the same year, with a thesis on discontinuous control of nonholonomic systems. He also earned a second PhD from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1996, focused on robust control of nonlinear systems. His career included positions as a lecturer at ETH Zurich, a visiting lecturer at the Terza University of Rome, and an associate professor at Politecnico di Milano. He returned to Imperial College London where he has held various roles, culminating in his current position as Professor of Non-Linear Control Theory in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering since 2005. He has received several awards, including the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2003 and the IEEE Control Systems Society Antonio Ruberti Young Researcher Prize in 2007, and has been recognized as an IEEE Fellow in 2009 for his contributions to nonlinear control theory and its applications.
