Biography

Alex Aylward is a Departmental Lecturer in History of Science at the University of Oxford. His research interests focus on the history of eugenics in twentieth-century Britain, specifically examining the institutional and political processes that led to the field's fluctuating status as a legitimate science. Aylward is currently writing a monograph entitled 'Selective Reading: Evolution, Eugenics, Contested Legacies of R. Fisher's Genetical Theory of Natural Selection'. He has published extensively on British statistician and geneticist R. Fisher and curated a related exhibition at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. He joined the History Faculty at Oxford in October 2021 after earning his PhD from the Centre for History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds. Previously, he served as a visiting scholar at Charles University in Prague and as an Eugene Garfield Pre-Doctoral Fellow at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. Aylward is also active in guiding students interested in historical research in areas such as modern science, life sciences, and scientific racism.
