Alex Brown is a scientist at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, specializing in the development of engineered human cell-based models and assays. His work aims to drive exploratory drug discovery efforts and answer key project questions. He earned his PhD in Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Linda Griffith. During his time at MIT, he explored ways to use interactions at cell-material interfaces to study emergent behavior in self-organization of cell populations. This research was centered on the idea of generating complex and controllable in vitro models of human tissue, which are relevant for studying disease mechanisms and drug efficacy. By using rational design biomaterials for culture platforms, Brown and his colleagues developed tissue models that generate data that is complementary to traditional cell culture and animal models. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering from Lehigh University.
