Alex de Koter is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam and also holds a professorship at KU Leuven. He obtained his PhD from Utrecht University in 1993 and spent four years at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, contributing to the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission. Since joining the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy in 1997, de Koter has focused his research on the formation and evolution of massive stars and the effects of intense radiation fields and outflows on the interstellar medium of host galaxies. His observational and theoretical studies utilize the largest observational facilities on Earth and in space, aiming to understand the role of stars in galaxy formation and the re-ionization of the universe. In 2016, he received the NWO-TOP1 grant to study the massive stars in dwarf galaxies within the Local Group. In addition to his scientific endeavors, de Koter is actively involved in the popularization of science.
