Alex François conducted fieldwork on hitherto undescribed endangered Oceanic (Austronesian) languages in northern Vanuatu (Banks & Torres Islands) and eastern Solomon Islands. His work focuses on the description and analysis of languages, typological and historical dimensions, with projects aimed at documenting oral literature, poetry, and music within communities. He has authored "Araki: Disappearing Language of Vanuatu" (2002) and "La Sémantique du Prédicat en Mwotlap" (2003). In 2013, he collaborated with ethnomusicologist Monika Stern to publish a selection of musical recordings from northern Vanuatu. He coauthored a major linguistic atlas of French Polynesia that was released in 2015. Recent years have seen him (co-)heading significant linguistic projects, including ComPLETE (2022-2025) and multiple initiatives related to typology and semantic change.
