Biography

Alex Green studied medicine at University College London, qualifying with an MB BS in 1997. He obtained class honours in Neurosciences (intercalated) in 1994. After completing his basic surgical rotation in the West Midlands, he entered neurosurgical training in London and Oxford from 2002 to 2009, culminating in the completion of his MD degree in Oxford. He became a consultant neurosurgeon in 2009 and is currently the president of the British Society for Stereotactic Functional Neurosurgery. Over the past six years, his research has focused on the neurocircuits underlying autonomic function and pain in humans undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). His aims include understanding the mechanisms behind the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain and controlling diseases such as hypertension and bladder dysfunction through brain manipulation. His work has resulted in numerous publications, including studies on the improvement of peak expiratory flow through stimulation and novel electrical signals associated with pain states.
