Biography

Alex Eric Hernandez is a Principal at Victoria College and an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Toronto. His scholarship specializes in 18th-century literature and culture, employing an interdisciplinary approach that balances historical detail with theoretical frameworks that prioritize reparation and anthropological curiosity. His book, 'Making British Bourgeois Tragedy: Modernity, Art, and Ordinary Suffering' (Oxford, 2019), presents innovative readings of 18th-century tragedy, focusing on the emotions of ordinary people and exploring how tragic works depict the misfortunes of the middle class, particularly through the lens of modern suffering. Hernandez's ongoing research interests include religion and affect, as well as critiques of Enlightenment ideals. Recent projects include 'Fabrics of Religion,' which examines readerly religious practices through materials from the long eighteenth century, and 'Empire’s Prayerbook,' exploring the Book of Common Prayer's role in shaping metaphysical boundaries. His work has been published in reputable journals such as 'Representations,' 'Eighteenth-Century Fiction,' and 'Modern Philology,' and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022. Hernandez is also a recipient of the Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award in 2021.
