Dr. Alex Houen

Biography

Alex Houen is a Professor of Modern Literature at the Faculty of English, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow at Pembroke College. He completed his BA(Hons) and two-year research MPhil at the University of Sydney before earning his PhD at King's College, Cambridge. Prior to his current position, he taught Modern Literature and American Studies at the University of Sheffield until 2009. His research interests encompass modern and contemporary fiction, poetry, and literature's relationship with war, critical theory, and aesthetics. He has published extensively, including peer-reviewed monographs, articles, and edited collections focusing on literary criticism, avant-garde literature, and themes of sacrifice and performativity in literature. He also has a notable interest in specific authors and theories, engaging with a wide range of notable figures in modern literature.
