Biography

Alex Q. Huang is a Professor and the Dula D. Cockrell Centennial Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1983, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 1986, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1992. Prior to his tenure at UT Austin, he was a faculty member at Virginia Tech from 1994 to 2004 and at NC State University from 2004 to 2017, where he was instrumental in establishing several internationally recognized public-private partnerships. His research expertise includes power semiconductor devices, advanced power electronics, smart grid technology, and renewable energy systems, having published over 550 papers and holding more than 20 patents. He is recognized as a leading expert in power semiconductor technologies and has contributed significantly to the Energy Internet concept and Solid State Transformer technology. Huang has graduated over 80 Ph.D. and master’s students and has received numerous accolades, including the IEEE IAS Gerald Kliman Innovator Award in 2019. He is a fellow of the IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors, and has served as general chair for the IEEE ECCE Conference in 2012.
