Biography

Alex Ketley is an independent choreographer, filmmaker, and director based in Stanford, California. He previously performed as a classical dancer with the San Francisco Ballet and LINES Ballet before establishing Foundry, a platform for innovative performance projects. Ketley emphasizes the exploration of choreography beyond traditional structures, evident in works such as 'Syntax,' an hour-long duet examining language mechanics, and 'Lost Line,' which investigates how the environment influences movement generation. He has also developed 'Please Love,' focusing on genuine human connections, and the 'Hero Trilogy,' a project that reflects on the impact of dance in rural America. His film 'Distal Imprint,' created in collaboration with Bill Clark, a death-row inmate, reflects the intersection of art and personal narrative. Ketley's work has garnered accolades nationally and internationally, including multiple Isadora Duncan Awards and prestigious fellowships such as the Guggenheim Fellowship. He is currently an Advanced Lecturer in the Theater and Performance Studies Department at Stanford University and has served as Resident Choreographer at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. Ketley is also actively involved in anti-death penalty advocacy, serving on the Board of Directors for Death Penalty Focus.
