Biography

Alex originally graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in Statistics. He then moved to the industry, working in the Medical Statistics department at Glaxo Group Research and Data Analysis Research Limited, focusing primarily on randomized clinical trials of pharmaceutical treatments. Transitioning into academia, Alex joined the Medicines Monitoring Unit at Dundee University, where he engaged in PhD work on the design and analysis of pharmacoepidemiological studies. He later became a part of the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics at Glasgow University, engaging in various epidemiological studies and clinical trials, while also managing the West of Scotland statistical advisory service, offering around 300 consultations. In October 2007, he became a Senior Lecturer in the Epidemiology section of Community Oral Health at Glasgow University's Dental School, where he teaches Research Methods to post-graduate students and supervises PhD candidates. Furthermore, he holds an honorary NHS position as a Consultant Epidemiologist with the Information Statistics Division, working closely with the Scottish National Dental Inspection Programme. His research interests lie in the design and analysis of observational and experimental human studies, predominantly within dental cancer epidemiology. He has been involved in significant projects, including the design of a randomized controlled trial for fluoride varnish treatments through the Childsmile Programme, and has published around 110 peer-reviewed papers. Alex is a member of the Royal Statistical Society and the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, and serves as a statistical advisor for PLoS Medicine and on editorial boards for journals like Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety and Frontiers in Public Health.
