Biography

Alex Pillen specializes in anthropology and language. His theoretical work has explored the visual and spatial dimensions of linguistic practice, particularly in relation to themes of war, brutality, and trauma, as published in Current Anthropology. Pillen coined the term ‘antipodal words’ to describe words that encapsulate opposite meanings, exploring concepts of death and displacement. His interest in spatial conceptualization of language has led to collaboration with architect-composer Emma-Kate Matthews, focusing on metaphors related to weaving and fabric. This work has resulted in a digital visualization of natural language. Recently, Pillen has continued his research aims on mobilization theory in anthropology and language, with a focus on Northern Kurdish Kurmanji and the contribution of various linguistic theorists. He has a forthcoming monograph titled 'Endurance: Speaking Kurdish Warped World' to be published by Brill in autumn 2024.
