Biography

Alex Sen Gupta is an Associate Professor at the Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC) and the Centre for Marine Science Innovation (CMSI) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He is a Chief Investigator and program leader at the ARC Australian Centre of Excellence for Antarctic Science (ACEAS) and an Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes (CLEX). His research focuses on the ocean climate system and its influences on regional climate, as well as the role of global climate models in predicting future ocean conditions. His work particularly addresses Marine Heatwaves, exploring their causes over time and their impacts on marine organisms. Additionally, Dr. Sen Gupta examines factors affecting high latitude Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation and its effects on climate variability and regional rainfall. He is involved in modeling the movement of tropical tuna and addressing climate model biases related to temperature variability that affect marine species. Recently, he has developed an interest in how artificial intelligence can impact education and research, conducting workshops for undergraduates, postgraduates, and academics. He created the Carbonator, a simple climate model designed for schools and the public to understand the effects of human actions on global warming, sea level rise, and ocean acidification.
