Biography

Alex K. Shalek is a J. W. Kieckhefer Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Chemistry, where he also serves as the Director of the Health Innovation Hub and the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science. He is an extramural member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT and a member of the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard, as well as the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His research focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to elucidate cellular and molecular features that inform tissue-level function and dysfunction in the context of human health and disease. Shalek Lab is dedicated to creating and implementing new technologies that aid in the characterization and control of complex multicellular systems. Current studies examine human diseases to understand the links between cellular features and clinical observations, including immune cell interactions and tumor responses to therapy. Shalek’s work aims to provide experimental and computational tools that advance scientific inquiry and transform our understanding of immune responses in tissues.
