Dr. Alex Shaw

Biography

Alex Shaw is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago, where he has been a faculty member since 2015. He earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Yale University and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Shaw had a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for Decision Research at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. His research broadly focuses on how children and adults navigate the social world, with a particular focus on reputation management and social signaling. He investigates how social judgments are formed and how individuals make decisions that balance reputational concerns. His work reveals that people cannot simply pursue a "good reputation"; rather, they must make complex decisions that consider long-term social implications, encompassing aspects of fairness, loyalty, and impartiality.
