Biography

Professor Alex Sutherland has over 20 years of experience in public policy evaluations, with a focus on criminal justice, education, and a range of social policy areas. He previously served as the Chief Scientist and Director of Research and Evaluation at the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), leading efforts in research standards and methodological development. Before joining BIT, he was a Senior Research Leader at RAND Europe, overseeing education and criminal justice portfolios and leading randomized trials. He has also worked as a lecturer at the University of Cambridge, where he taught advanced quantitative methods and research design to graduate students. Sutherland completed his DPhil at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, and has a background in criminology from the Centre for Criminology, Oxford. His current research includes large randomized controlled trials, such as the Focused Deterrence program across five sites in England, and he advises the Metropolitan Police Service’s Strategic Insight Unit, collaborating with various UK government departments on crime reduction initiatives and adult education programs.
