Biography

Alex Taylor is a Sir Henry Dale Fellow and lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at King's College London. He graduated from Imperial College with a BSc (ARCS 1999) and earned his MSc (2003) and PhD (2007) at King's College London, specializing in Cell & Molecular Biophysics. In 2010, he joined Philipp Holliger's lab at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, focusing on synthetic biology and the potential of creating chemical alternatives to natural nucleic acids. His research explores the implications of synthetic genetic polymers, dubbed 'Xeno-Nucleic Acids' (XNAs), for the origins of life and artificial life technologies, with potential applications in medicine. Alex has received significant recognition for his work, including publication in prestigious journals such as Science and Nature. He was awarded the Wellcome Trust Royal Society Sir Henry Dale Fellowship in 2020 to establish his own laboratory at the University of Cambridge, and he returned to King's College London in 2024 to continue exploring XNA-based tools for biomedical research.
