Biography

Alex van Stipriaan Luïscius is a professor emeritus in Caribbean History and Culture at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He began his academic career as a lecturer in 1986 and became a full professor in 1996 after completing his PhD cum laude at Free University Amsterdam in 1991. Over the years, he has combined his professorship with a curatorship at the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, where he worked for ten years. His research focuses on Afro-Caribbean history and cultural heritage, especially relating to Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean, as well as the processes of creolization in the context of the Black Atlantic. He has also engaged in various government consultancy roles and research projects centered around intercultural heritage education.
