Biography

Alex Walthall specializes in the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean region, particularly ancient Sicily. His research explores issues related to the visual language of Hellenistic monarchy, the impact of agricultural taxation on trade, and the economic performance of the ancient world in relation to numismatics and archaeology. Walthall currently serves as Director of the American Excavations at Morgantina, the longest-running American-led archaeological mission in Italy, which has provided fieldwork training and research opportunities for students since 1955. In this role, he supports the publication of research in the Morgantina Studies series and promotes ongoing collaboration with Italian colleagues while guiding active excavation research at the archaeological site. His recent publications focus on various aspects of Morgantina and Hellenistic society, contributing to a greater understanding of ancient economies and cultural practices.
