Biography

Alex Woloch received a B.A. from Columbia College and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University. He specializes in literary criticism and narrative theory, focusing on the history of the novel and nineteenth to twentieth-century literature. Woloch is the author of 'The One vs. the Many: Minor Characters and the Space of the Protagonist' (Princeton, 2003), which addresses the centrality of characterization in narrative poetics, and 'Orwell: Writing Democratic Socialism' (Harvard, 2016), which closely examines George Orwell’s innovative non-fiction prose in relation to literature and politics. His current book project, tentatively titled 'Partial Representation', explores the complex relationship between realism and the narrative form across various media and genres. Woloch has co-edited 'Freud?: The Place of Psychoanalysis in Contemporary Culture' (Yale, 2000). He has held multiple academic appointments at Stanford University, including Professor of English and the Department Chair of the English Department. Woloch has been recognized with various awards, including the Sonya Rudikoff Memorial Prize in Victorian Studies and the Richard E. Guggenhime Faculty Scholar award. He has served on numerous editorial boards and committees, contributing to the field of literature and its academic community.
