Alexa Yakubovich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on uncovering the causes of violence and its negative health outcomes, with a particular emphasis on gender-based violence, including intimate partner violence and sexualized violence. The impacts of gender-based violence are significant, including substantial mental health problems, injury, and chronic pain. Nova Scotia has the highest self-reported prevalence of intimate partner violence among Canadian provinces. Dr. Yakubovich’s research is equity- and action-oriented, conducted in partnership with policy-makers, organizations, and communities, particularly involving those with lived experiences of violence. She is the recipient of the inaugural Eastern Canada Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Health System Impact Embedded Early Career Research program and leads multiple research streams aimed at designing and evaluating interventions that prevent violence and address health inequities. Using a variety of research methods—such as epidemiological techniques, mixed methods, and systematic reviews—she aims to develop policies and interventions that are effective in addressing the burdens of violence within the health systems and communities.
