Dr. Alexander Afshar

Biography

Alexander Shayesteh Afshar is an Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in Dermatology and Venereology at Umeå University, where he also serves as a Senior Semester Coordinator. His research focuses on primary hyperhidrosis, particularly its clinical aspects, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He has developed validated questionnaires for treatment evaluation in the Swedish population suffering from excessive sweating. His research also encompasses studies related to the Impostor Phenomenon, heart rate variability, and the development of instruments to measure hyperhidrosis. Dr. Afshar has been involved in Clinical Trials for approved medications and has contributed to qualitative research regarding patients living with lipedema and experiences associated with psoriatic arthritis. Additionally, he is a member of the national group investigating Topical Steroid Withdrawal Syndrome among the Swedish population and part of the steering committee for the national registry of Swedish patients with atopic eczema (SwedAD). He has worked with the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden to develop guidelines for laser treatment of children and adolescents experiencing excessive hair growth related to gender dysphoria. Through his teaching, he covers various topics in dermatology, including diseases of eccrine and apocrine glands and the use of laser treatments, while regularly lecturing on these topics nationally and internationally.
