Alexander Bartelt investigates molecular biology metabolism relating to obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. His work at the Bartelt Lab has provided insights into the inner workings of metabolism and the interaction of fat cells with the immune system. His research focuses on nutrition, energy metabolism, and thermogenesis, while examining how weight gain and loss are regulated at the cellular level. Bartelt studies metabolic adaptation and molecular stress factors, which are central to the pathogenesis of complex cardiometabolic diseases. He began his scientific career at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and obtained his PhD in 2010, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism. After conducting research on brown adipose tissue at Harvard University, he returned to Germany and became a Professor of Cardiovascular Metabolism at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in 2019. In 2024, he will assume the role of inaugural Kröner Fresenius Professor and Chair of Translational Nutritional Medicine at TUM Weihenstephan Campus. He is also a principal investigator at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center Munich and a member of the German Center for Diabetes Research and German Center for Cardiovascular Diseases.
